Crafting Black Ecologies: Further Reading List

For the 2022 American Association of Geographers Meeting (AAG), I gathered with fellow community builders, makers, and crafters for “Crafting Black Ecologies” for two virtual panels at the crossroads of black ecologies, critical studies of craft and material culture, and art-based methods.

Here’s more info about these sessions, why I was excited to organize them, and how we co-created the space.

Fellow panelists included Jennifer Blanks, Tianna Bruno, Ayana Omilade Flewellen, shah noor hussein, Danicia Malone, Morgan P. Vickers, and Jennifer Steverson.

  • Here are some of the further readings and resources that have shaped our work. We may continue to add! Google Doc.

  • You can also find more about Black ecologies, Black environmental history, and more on this virtual bookshelf.

  • And, are you interested in future events along the lines of Crafting Black Ecologies (or collaborations!)? Reach out by e-mail or join the e-letter here.

And lastly, so much of what we discussed yesterday was the importance of having and creating spaces where the art work we create as scholars, is honored, celebrated, and considered research. Another intention for these sessions was to strategically build a space where creative work is centered.

Onward,

Naya
